This latest solo exhibition by Chinese ink painter Hong Sek Chern, transmit ideas from Stages, thepoignant poem by German-Swiss poet, novelist and painter Hermann Hesse. Reflecting onthe natural order of impermanence, encouraging preparations for our mortal departures,Stages, according tothe artist, put into words what these series of paintings tried to address in Chinese ink. Executed onan assemblage of various types of traditional Chinese ink painting papers, the high key coloured urban scapes resemble maps and way finders.
For this exhibition, each painting seems to be referencing some form of structure that hovers within the pictorial plane. These can be seen not as actual structures but as a suggestion of them.
